Lithium Dosage #3: Rating system
I am going to change the rating system in this blog, from 1-10 with 10 being the highest to 1-5 with 5 being the highest. The reason behind this change is that I felt that a scale of 10 seems unnecessarily complicated. The scale of 10 is not actually arbitrary; I have each score with its corresponding criteria saved on my phone. Such criteria is based mostly on strength of ideas, i.e., the rating increases the more life-changing and worldview-shaking the ideas are. What I value in media, literature, and games after all are their effect on my human-ness, not pertaining to the looming possibility of me becoming an android, but pertaining to this endless creating and re-establishing of my identity. In other words, if I can take away anything from the media I consume that may form part of who I am, I would rate such media higher than if I couldn't take away anything. I did this with a scale of 10, which I enjoyed at first, but deem it mendokusai now. There's just too many numbers to think of, leading to more relations and comparisons to consider, leading to unnecessary confusion.
Therefore, I am switching to a simpler rating system: a scale 5. Let me take this opportunity to clarify the corresponding comments for each score, exhibiting how awfully simpler this is going to be:
- 1 - it's really bad
- 2 - it's good but I can live without it
- 3 - it's good and worth at least one viewing/playing/reading/listening
- 4 - it's really good; I'll recommend it to anyone
- 5 - it's a historical treasure of the world
Have a good day.
