Lithium Dosage #2: SCANDAL

Scandal is an all-female Japanese rock band I've been listening to since my anime-infested high school nearly a decade ago. However, I only started to enjoy Scandal's music beyond nonchalance two years ago, when I was desperately trying to graduate from college. It was a painfully difficult time for me. Time was set out to drown me, and I couldn't even swim. For some reason (aside from the fact that I already like their music), I started listen to Scandal religiously. I was also listening to other bands, like Soundgarden, Nirvana and My Chemical Romance, but they are enablers to my self-destructive tendencies back then. In contrast, Scandal was a breath of fresh air; a sensation of good news; a sonic anti-depressant; a serene happy place; the hope of a morning sun. My favorite album of theirs, Yellow, was that friend who would tell me that it's okay to lie in bed today so I can pick myself up and try again tomorrow. Needless to say, I successfully graduated from college a year ago, and I have Scandal's music to thank for that.

As you can see, Scandal is very personal to me. So you can imagine my frantic delight when they announced in February this year that they would be performing in the Philippines, my country, in June. The Philippines was one of their stops in their Asia Tour, which followed the release of their latest album Honey on Valentine's Day. They had never performed in the Philippines before, so this would be their first time.

It was crazy and exciting! I had been dreaming about seeing them live for the longest time, especially two years ago. I would surely grab this opportunity.

Earlier this year, I was in a disappointing state once again. I was unemployed, performing badly in law school, and losing love. I was broke; I had to borrow money from a supportive friend to be able to afford the tickets before they run out.

This concert became my wake-up call. I worked for a part-time job so I can pay off my debt. I vowed to do well in law school starting in the next semester. I lost love, but I was able to reassemble my self.

On June 24, I attended Scandal's concert.

Memories of a lifetime were made.

Nothing has ever come close to the joy I felt that night.

...

I exited the convention area a different man. At least, I promised I will be.
